  • This research evaluates the success of restoration of trees and shrubs on a remnant area of the Brazilian restinga - coastal sandy plain - near Rio de Janeiro.
  • On this area, exotic grasses had come to dominate and restrict the growth of shrub and tree species. After 2 years since planting, 81.9% of the plants survived.
  • Nine of the 17 species had low growth which may be explained by the wind.
  • Pseudobombax grandiflorum, Cupania emarginata, Senna austalis, and Tocoyena bullata had the highest height increase over the two years.
  • The authors suggest that the results of their study demonstrate the possibility of successful restinga restoration and encourage native species over exotic species reforestation.
