  • In this research, growth rates and biomass production and allocation were assessed for seedlings of 9 native tree species in a nursery in Mexico.
  • Each tree is nitrogen fixing and has potential use for reforestation projects.
  • At 165 days since germination, Pithecellobium dulce, Leucaena esculenta, and Acacia pennatula had the lowest relative growth rates.
  • Initial seedling weight (early after germination) was positively correlated with seed weight.
  • For root biomass, Leucaena and Lysiloma species had the most long and thin roots, and the Acacia species an P. dulce had thick roots.
  • The Acacia species had the most biomass production and root/shoot ratios, but the lowest root length/root dry weight ratio.
  • Stem length was highest in Acacia farnesiana and Lysiloma divaricata.
  • The authors assert that knowing how seedlings grow is important for forest managers to be able to select species for reforestation and create optimal nursery conditions for the production of vigorous plants.
