  • The mission of this project is to restore coastal Atlantic forest in Brazil and subsequently conserve biodiversity and increase carbon sequestration.  
  • The project is a partnership between the Society for Wildlife Research and Environmental Education (SPVS) and the Nature Conservancy (TNC) with funding from General Motors, American Electric Power, and ChevronTexaco.
  • Beginning in 2000, so far 1,500 ha of land have been planted in what the project calls the Guaraquecaba Enviornmental Protection Area (APA) which is situated in the Guaraquecaba, Antonina, Campina Grande do Sul, and Paranagua municipalities in the Rio Cachoera watershed of the Parana state, Brazil.
  • The restoration is on degraded buffalo grazing areas and is meant to serve as a model of restoration to be adapted or replicated in other degraded areas of similar climate.
  • Species were chosen according to their natural occurrence, soil preferences, successional stages, and coverage. Initial information about the species was obtained by experiments carried out previously by SPVS. 
  • All seedlings come from the organization's own nurseries.
  • Future plans include monitoring the trees and conducing scientific research on the restoration success of the project.
