  • In this study, five native tree species (Azadirachta excelsa, Cinnamomum iners, Intsia palembanica, Hopea pubescens and Shorea leprosula) were planted in degraded (logged) areas of the Pasoah Forest Researve area in Malaysia.
  • For nine years since establishment, the trees were measured for diameter at breast height (DBH), height, and survivability.
  • All five species exhibited a DBH growth between 1.93 and 2.11 cm per year and height growth between 0.77 and 1.38 m per year.
  • Azadirachta excelsa had the fastest growth in terms of mean diameter (2.11 cm per year) and height (1.38 m per year) as well as high survivability (74.1%).
  • Cinnamomum iners had the highest survivability (76.3%) and relatively high diameter growth (1.96 cm per year), but had the lowest highet growth of 0.77 m per year.
  • The authors suggest that the low survivability of the shade tolerant dipterocarp species, S. leprosula (20.7%) and H. pubescens (44.4%), was likely due to the high light conditions in the heavily logged site.
  • Meanwhile, they recommend A. excelsa and C. iners for open planting because of their high survivability in this trial.
