  • This article discusses the possible function of agroforestry and silvopastoral systems as carbon sinks to compensate for greenhouse gas emissions.
  • The carbon sequestration potential of some tropical agroforestry systems is analyzed and estimated to be between 12 and 228 Mg/ha.
  • A table is provided with carbon sequestration potentials divided by ecoregion and general geographic location. 
  • The authors state that an area between 585×106 ha and 1215×106 ha is suitable for agroforestry practices, and extrapolate that 1.1 to 2.2 Pg of carbon could potentially be stored in the biomass of agroforestry systems over the next 50 years.
  • Long rotation systems, durable wood products and soil carbon sequestration are all viable carbon sinks associated with agroforestry systems.
  • The limitations and uncertainties associated with carbon sequestration in agroforestry systems are also discussed.
  • The authors give several recommendations for future research to improve our understanding of carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas mitigation.
