  • This article presents research from Chiapas, Mexico on the relationship between shade cover and coffee yields.
  • Data was collected in 36 plots to determine the effects of a shade gradient ranging from 23 to 70% shade cover in plots of coffee plants in four different age classes: 1) 2-6 years, 2) 7-11 years, 3) 12-15 years, and 4) greater than 15 years.
  • Measurements included coffee bush density, plant species richness, shade species height and diameter, as well as coffee yields over a period of 3 years.
  • Interviews conducted with local coffee farmers revealed 61 species of shrubs and shade trees intercropped in the coffee agroforestry system, with 88.5% identified as native species; of the species identified, many were multi-purpose species, with uses including food, firewood, construction, among others.
  • In this study, the highest coffee yields were found in plots with shade cover between 30 and 40%, showing the positive effect of shade cover in coffee systems. 
  • The authors conclude that up to 50% shade and up to 460 shade trees per hectare may be managed with no significant reduction in yields, while also providing added economic benefits besides coffee production.
