Description

  • This research investigates effects of an Inga spp. dominated shade canopy versus a multiple species canopy on coffee yields and soil nutrient content in Chiapas, Mexico.
  • Inga latibracteatawas the dominant species in the Inga spp. system; the multiple species canopy system also included Inga latibracteata but primarily consisted of species-rich natural vegetation.
  • Significant differences were not found in coffee yield between the two systems; however, species richness, shade-tree density, and number of strata were significantly higher in the multiple species canopy system.
  • No significant differences were found in soil-nutrient content between the two systems.
  • A perceived benefit of the Inga system to local farmers is the elimination of one annual weed-clearing; however, the multiple species system may provide other products and services.
  • The authors emphasize the need for further research on the differences between the two systems, especially with regard to nutrient cycling.
