  • This article discusses the colonization of native tree species in coffee agroforestry systems that results from the habitat these systems provide for seed dispersers.
  • Genetic markers were used to determine the dispersal history and spatial genetic structure of the understory tree Miconia affinis throughout a series of coffee farms and forest fragments in Chiapas, Mexico.
  • The results of the experiment showed no difference in the genetic diversity of M. affinis between the coffee farms and primary forest.
  • The authors explain the importance of coffee agroforestry systems for maintaining genetic connectivity with adjacent forest and, therefore, for assisting with forest regeneration.
