  • The article describes the results of a study which measured forest structure and tree species diversity within coffee farms in Veracruz, Mexico across three different management types: shade monoculture, simple polyculture, and diverse polyculture.
  • The results were compared to nearby primary forest fragments.
  • Structural complexity was the most advanced within the primary forest; however, the mean canopy height of the simple polyculture and diverse polyculture coffee farms was similar to that of the primary forest.
  • Excluding the primary forest, tree density was highest in the shade monoculture, while basal area and mean/maximum height were highest in the polyculture farms.
  • In total, 107 tree species were recorded, including 83 natives species; 71% of the species found were rare.
  • Tree species richness was around 11 species
  • The number of animal-dispersed species was most similar to the primary forest in the polyculture farms.
  • The authors suggest the importance of considering the complementarity of farms in the conservation of native tree species across the landscape.
