Description

  • This literature review provides a historical overview of agroforestry systems in Costa Rica from the 1970s to the present.
  • Agroforestry systems in Costa Rica have evolved since the 1970s to include an increasing number of species.
  • Over time, different tree species have been evaluated to determine their adaptability and rates of growth.
  • Different agroforestry systems are discussed including: plantation crop combinations, taungya systems, improved fallows, silvopastoral systems, multipurpose trees on crop lands, home gardens, and alley cropping.  
  • The author recommends that future research on agroforestry focus on the adoptability of new techniques and farmer acceptance.
