  • This article presents an overview of the science and policy of sequestering atmospheric carbon through forestry as a means of mitigating climate change.
  • The author explains the importance of defining and addressing the concepts "Carbon Offset" and "Additionality" to ensure that sequestration occurs by the deliberate action of the forestry project.
  • Forestry can have a role in preventing the release of carbon through forest protection, as well as enhancing sequestration by encouraging the growth of trees through plantations, enrichment plantings, and agroforestry.
  • As a case study, this article evaluates the carbon offset project Innoprise-Face Foundation Rainforest Rehabilitation Project (INFAPRO) in Sabah Malaysia, which began in 1992.
  • This project is meant to rehabilitate 25,000 ha of logged forest by enrichment plantings with native tree species (such as dipterocarps), fast growing pioneers, and forest fruit trees.
  • The authors model the offsets that would occur over a 60 year lifespan, finding that there is carbon release for the first 5-10 years of the project, but the sequestration increases after 10 years, with the potential for an average of 100.02 tons of carbon per hectare per year sequestered by the 60th year.
  • After 60 years, the project plans to harvest the timber, while promoting natural regeneration.
  • It is estimated that the project will cost about $5.00 per ton of carbon stored, which the author asserts is less than the current costs of other mitigation efforts.
