Description

  • This study compared nine actively reforested riparian forest areas of different ages with a 23 year old naturally reforested area and mature forest in terms of biomass, richness, basal area, and crown cover in the Médio Vale do Paranapanema in São Paulo, Brazil.
  • The naturally reforested area (23 years old) was similar to actively reforested forest of just 3 years in age in terms of basal area and crown cover, suggesting that active reforestation in this context increases the rate of forest recovery.
  • The oldest planted forests (13 years old) were similar in structure to mature forests, but contained much lower levels of species richness.
  • Natural regeneration of tree species was not found in planted areas younger than 7 years old, and was dominated by animal dispersed seeds.
