Description

  • This project began in 1992 to promote the regeneration of 25,000 ha of highly degraded logged forest and increase the capacity for carbon sequestration on the site.
  • The project takes place within the Yayasan Sabah concession area within the Ulu Segama Forest Reserve in the Lahad Datu District, and it is meant to serve as a buffer zone near the Danum Valley Conservation Area.
  • The project employs over 50 staff members who collect seeds, germinate them in the nursery, search for wildings to transplant, engage in enrichment planting on the degraded site, and handle many other administrative and logistical tasks.
  • So far, over 11,000 hectares have been planted with emissions reductions estimated at over 100,000 per year.
  • The project has been registered under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and carbon credits can be purchased.
