Description

  • Status: Active
  • The mission of this project is to increase tree density on 224 ha of degraded agricultural land in the High Andes in Piura (3000 meters asl).
  • In 2010 tree nurseries were started and in 2011 24 ha were planted with both exotic (Pinus patula and Pinus radiata) and native tree species (Polylepis incana and Alnus jorullensis).
  • An additional 100ha is planned for planting in 2012 and 2013.
  • The eventual goal is to increase the reforestation area to 1000 ha, depending on investors and the ability to pre-finance the increase in planting area.
  • The project has received Rainforest Alliance certification.
  • The project was certified according to the CarbonFix standard in July 2011, making it the first community reforestation project to be successfully certified in Peru.
  • The first round of credits have been issued and 10% of the carbon revenues will be invested into making coffee production at lower elevations more sustainable (e.g. by planting shade trees).
