Description

  • This study conducted in the seasonal rainforest of Northern Brazil (Para), compared pasture, mature forest, and natural forest re-growth (capoeira)
  • The authors found that in less than 15 years, the secondary forest had similar hydrological functioning to the mature forest, in terms of seasonally averaged soil water reserves (at depths of 0-8m) and evapo-transpiration. 
  • They also found that trees transpire more water during dry seasons and years than what falls in total rain (ie, evapo-transpiration is higher than rainfall)- this is possible due to the re-charge of the groundwater during the wet season and the trees having deep roots to tap it.
