  • This study examines silvicultural management of mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) and kadam (Anthocephalus cadamba) in south Kalimantan, Indonesia.
  • Farmers received seedlings from a plywood company, and planted the trees in combination with fruit trees and rubber. Most farmers conducted site preparation, fertilization, and weeding. Farmers conducted pruning to variable extents, so this metric was chosen as a comparison.
  • Research was conducted by interviewing farmers and performing regression to analyze socio-economic factors that correlated with silvicultural practices.
  • Researchers found that with mahogany, larger plantations and individuals receiving more extension training practiced more active silviculture. Kadam was less marketable and less actively managed. However, in cases of kadam management, increased household size and more active involvement in farmers groups meant more active management.
  • Pruning activity and timing had an effect on the merchantable wood in mahogany sites (practiced between 6-9 months and 3 years of tree age). Kadam does not need pruning.
  • Thinning of mahogany is recommended at 6 years, while thinning of kadam is recommended at 3 years. However, farmers in the research study had not thinned their stands because stocking density was low because of intercropping with other trees.
