Description

  • In 1986, trees were planted on 8 ha of high salinity common land in the semi-arid Aravalli hills of Haryana, India. Their growth parameters and soil pH, organic carbon, electrical conductivity, and available phosphorus were measured after 5.5 and 13.5 years.
  • In total 635 trees (300 Prosopis juliflora, 100 Eucalyptus hybrid, 105 Acacia nilotica, 50 Albizzia lebbek, 50 Dalbergia sissoo, 15 Acacia tortalis and 15 Lucenea leucocephala) chosen for their suitability in arid areas and high fodder yields were planted in 40 10x10m plots. The trees were irrigated and pruned and thinned periodically and grazing and leaf litter collection were prohibited.
  • A total of 120 composite soil samples were taken at three depths (0–15, 15–30 and 30–45 cm) and analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity, organic carbon, total nitrogen, and available phosphorus all of which had significant improvement after 3.5 and 13.5 years.
  • Additionally measures of economic wellbeing were calculated; grass productivity was quantified by counting headloads harvested and employment records were kept.
  • Out of the twelve species planted, only five (Acacia nilotica. Albizzia lebbek, Dalbergia sissoo, Eucalyptus hybrid, and Prosopis juliflora) survived after 13.5 years.
  • Biomass was computed using regression equations developed locally at TERI’s forestry research center. The total biomass production per plot was 864.7 kg (dry weight) and the plantation had a total growing stock of 699.8 tonne.
