Gmelina arborea (native)


  • As part of a long term project focused on the reclamation and regeneration of a degraded ecosystem at Durg, Chhattisgarh, India, the authors attempt to determine how Gmelina arborea plantations on red lateritic soil affects growth, biomass, nutrient storage and carbon sequestration over time.
  • Six-month-old healthy seedlings (uniform size) of G. arborea were planted on three red lateritic sites at 3m spacing during July 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999.
  • Morphological growth parameters (dbh, total height and number of branches) were recorded in five randomly selected 10 · 10 m sample quadrats in each age class at three sites during August–September 2000.
  • Allometric regression models were developed through destructive sampling and the randomly collected plant samples were also analyzed for N, P and K.
  • After six years of planting, the total carbon (vegetation + soil) was 40.77 Mg ha-1
  • The authors concluded that G. arborea is a suitable tree for planting in degraded lateritic soils compared to many other indigenous species. The species was also found to be useful for carbon sequestration as well as soil amelioration through nitrogen and potassium enrichment.
