Description

  • This study examined how fragmentation changes the ecological properties and plant species diversity in the tropical wet rainforests of Yunnan, China, and with that bringing a new perspective as most previous fragmentation studies have focused on animal species.
  • The researchers analyzed the fragmentation on three fragmented plots, which are located within “holy hills” which are barely touched due to religious regions. A control plot was laid in a nearby nature reserve.
  • As many former studies in other regions indicated, the researchers found that in many aspects the fragmented forests differ from the control reserve. This includes differences in interior climate and soil properties but also influences the vertical structure of the forest.
  • The species composition was nearly the same, however, there were large differences in abundance. Pioneer species and lianas dominated in fragmented forests, species that occurred only in small numbers in the first place often entirely disappeared. This positively correlated with the severity of disturbance as well.
